Insurance for idiot employees needed.
October 5, 2008
It’s all been happening in Witham this week.
An employer who suspected his employee of fraud (cheque cashing without permission) frog marched the bloke to the local police station, and lands up arrested himself, for false imprisonment etc.
A boss who suspected a worker of theft decided to make an example of him – and throw political correctness out of the window at the same time.
Simon Cremer and three of his employees allegedly wrestled Mark Gilbert to the ground, tied his hands behind his back and bundled him into a van.
They then drove him to the town centre where he was made to wear a sign naming him as a thief. He was paraded in front of startled shoppers before being frogmarched 350 yards to the police station, where he was arrested on suspicion of theft.
Could only happen in the UK.
What comes across as I read the articles is, the boss, is a well meaning, respectful (he carpeted the floor of his van, before he sat the employee in it) sort of person, that someone would love to work for. The employee decided he was entitled to take a cheque from the employer, and then cash it down cash converters.
It’s all well and good for the employee to say, he was entitled to the money, but if he was, why was he taking it to cash converters? Why not through his own bank account? As an employee, I gather he had been there some time, so why couldnt he talk to his boss if he was having problems? saying he needed the money for a holiday, seems a bit wishy washy to me.
Employees have the right to take bad empoyers to tribunals, but what rights do employers have when an employee has behaved badly? Isnt it about time we had insurance for acts of stupidity from employees?
