A Gift For An Idiot
February 28, 2009
Is a very quirky book of poetry I have been reading, by a man called Dave Dennison, who is vice president of Spurs Football club and a colleague of Alan Sugar.
What makes ‘A gift for an Idiot’ interesting to me is each most pages have a little bit of info about how each poem has been inspired, and it makes the poems more human knowing where they are from. They tell a story of this man’s life, the happiness and sadness and the wonder.
My favourite has to be what in my mind I have labelled the ‘breakfast networkers’ poem but is actually a song wrote for Famous Essex Girl Denise Van Outen.
A snippet here for you
A big one in the morning
Theres nothing stops me yawning,
Like a big one in the morning
Bacon, eggs , wiv a sausage on the side
English breakfast full of pride
The notes in red tell me that it was wrote as a song for Denise back in 1998 when she was on the Big Breakfast Show, and Chas n Dave set it too music.
It’s unfortunate she never got to record it.
The special edition book is available at the website www.agiftforanidiot.com and proceeds go to Essex based charity, Farleigh Hospice and an Enfield Alzheimers charity, both very worthy causes.
Dave’s work is very quirky and even though he was told “Concentrate more on your science Dennison, you may have a gift for poetry but, it’s a gift for an idiot!” he still wrote this book. A poetical autobiography.
